What Ojochal is like and what to know before you stay — its surprising culinary reputation, the quiet jungle setting, nearby beaches, and how it sits within the region.
Ojochal is a small village at the southern end of the Costa Ballena, in the canton of Osa, Puntarenas province — roughly ten to fifteen minutes south of Uvita along the Costanera highway. It sits slightly inland, tucked into dense jungle and low hills, which gives it a quieter, more private feel than the beach towns to the north.
It is the southernmost of the three Costa Ballena towns — Dominical, Uvita, and Ojochal — and the gateway toward the wilder Osa Peninsula beyond. Many guests pair a stay in the area with a meal or two in Ojochal even when their villa sits closer to Uvita.
Ojochal’s reputation is out of all proportion to its size: it is widely described as the food capital of Costa Rica. A community of chefs from many countries settled here over the years, and the result is a remarkable concentration of international restaurants — French, Mediterranean, Asian fusion, Middle Eastern, Italian, and South American — alongside fresh local seafood.
For guests who enjoy eating well, Ojochal is a destination in itself. Long-running spots such as Exotica and Citrus draw diners from across the region, and reservations are worth making in the busier season. It is an easy, rewarding evening out from a villa anywhere between Dominical and Ojochal.
Ojochal’s nearest beach, Playa Tortuga, is quiet and scenic — better known for its rivermouth, birdlife, and mangrove tours than for swimming, and far less busy than the beaches further north. The village itself is residential and green, surrounded by forest, with wildlife a constant presence.
Day to day, Ojochal is calm and unhurried even by the standards of this coast. Guests who want privacy, nature, and food — rather than nightlife or surf — tend to find it a particularly good fit, while still being a short, paved drive from Uvita’s services and Marino Ballena National Park.
Most visitors fly into San José International (SJO) and drive south on the Costanera highway, or take a domestic flight to Quepos Airport (XQP) and continue by road. The coastal highway through Ojochal is fully paved, though some residential access roads in the hills are not.
As elsewhere on this coast, villa access varies — some homes need a 4×4, others are fully paved. The transportation guide covers the 4×4 question, shuttles, night driving, and domestic flights in full.
