Getting around Costa Rica is part of the experience, particularly in the Southern Pacific region. While the country is geographically compact, travel times, road conditions, and logistics often feel different from what guests expect on a first visit.
This section explains how transportation actually works here, not just in theory but in practice. The goal is to help guests choose options that fit their arrival timing, comfort level, and the way they want their days to feel — rather than following a single recommended formula.
Renting a car is the most common and flexible way to get around once in the Southern Pacific region. Most guests choose a 4×4 vehicle — not because roads are extreme, but because the mix of paved highways, gravel access roads, and hillside driveways is common here. A 4×4 provides better clearance, stability, and comfort, especially when accessing homes in the hills.
All 4×4 rental vehicles in Costa Rica are automatic. Manual transmission is typically limited to smaller two-wheel-drive cars, which makes driving straightforward even for guests unaccustomed to mountain roads.
A note on insurance: the daily rate shown when booking online generally does not include mandatory third-party liability coverage, which is required by Costa Rican law and added at the counter. This often makes the final cost noticeably higher than the original quote — normal rather than a surprise charge, but worth knowing in advance.
When selecting a rental car, guests often focus on passenger count, but luggage and comfort matter just as much. We frequently recommend requesting two quotes: a 4×4 SUV for five passengers, and a larger 4×4 SUV often listed as a premium or seven-passenger option.
If the price difference is minimal, the larger option often provides a noticeably more comfortable experience — extra cargo space, stronger engines, and improved suspension — especially for families, groups with surfboards, or guests planning to explore extensively.
After booking international flights, one common decision is whether to drive from San José or take a domestic flight and continue by road. Driving from San José allows maximum flexibility — your rental car from the start, stops along the way, freedom to explore on arrival.
Domestic flights significantly reduce total travel time. Flights from San José to Quepos Airport have become more frequent in recent years. From Quepos, the drive to most homes is short, and rental cars or private transfers can be arranged locally. Both options work well; the best choice depends on arrival time, group size, and comfort with driving.
Private airport shuttles are popular for guests who prefer not to drive on arrival day. Drivers are familiar with the routes, road conditions, and the homes themselves, which makes this option especially appealing for evening arrivals or families with children.
A common approach is to arrive by private shuttle and have the rental car delivered directly to the home the following morning. This works especially well for late arrivals and guests who prefer not to drive after a long travel day. Delivery and pickup at the home are generally free services.
Driving after dark in Costa Rica feels different than in many other countries. Roads often lack street lighting, curves are common, and signage can be limited.
